The Finishing Touch

When creating a custom area rug, runner or stair runner, you have options.

There are several kinds of finishes and applications that can be used to finish off carpet.  Some of the most common include binding, serging or nylon.

Binding

The options of texture and colour is plentiful, as illustrated through Cortenaer Wool Carpet’s binding selection of Linen, Indus or Kaleidescope Cotton. With a total of 45 colours and 3 textures to select from, you’re sure to achieve your design goals.

There is also the flexibility of how much of the binding you wish to see “on face,” meaning how much you want to see on top of the carpet. You can have as little as 1/4” up to 3” on face with a few minor differences;

¼” on face binding is slim line and would have an overlap at the corners and blind stitched, so you only see the binding and not the stitch.

A binding on face of 1” to 3” will have the corners mitered and blind stitched presenting a clean look.

Binding gives a rug or runner a more tailored and classic finish.

Serging

Serging is a method used to finish the edge of an area rug, runner or stair runner. Its distinct look is achieved by yarn that is wrapped around the edge of the carpet continuously. Yarn is selected that compliments and colour matches the carpet, giving it the appearance of being hand-sewn and creates a higher-end look.

Cotton and Nylon Machine Binding

Cotton and nylon tape are the most cost-effective and commonly used to finish a carpet edge. The edge is approximately ¼” on face, colour matched to the carpet. Nylon tape has a sheer finish.

WOOL absorbs moisture and prevents a build-up of static electricity; therefore, wool does not attract lint and dust from the air. The crimp of the wool fibre assists in keeping dirt from penetrating the surface and makes it easier to clean as well. Regular vacuuming will remove dirt and revitalize the wool pile.

WOOL…Is Environmentally Friendly

WOOL is a completely natural and renewable resource that is biodegradable. Wool readily biodegrades in soil because it breaks down into plant nutrients such as nitrogen, sulfur, carbon dioxide, and water.

Man-made fibres such as nylon, polyester, and acrylic are made from nonrenewable fossil fuels, are emission intensive, and contaminate the environment.

WOOL…Is Fire Resistant

WOOL is the most naturally flame resistant fibre, it simply won’t burn! Wool does not need to be specially treated due to the high moisture and nitrogen content of the natural structure of wool. Synthetic fibres ignite and burn quickly and continue to burn after the flame is stifled.

WOOL…Naturally Elastic

WOOL can be twisted, turned, and stretched, and will return to its natural shape. This is why wool carpets retain their springy pile for many years.

WOOL… Resists Static

WOOL naturally absorbs moisture from the air and as such, the tendency to collect static electricity is reduced. Walking across a wool carpet, you are less likely to receive a shock when you touch a grounded object.

Maintenance

Vacuum Regularly
Vacuuming often is wool’s best friend. This is the most effective and economical way to remove soil and dirt particles before they become embedded into the carpet pile. You cannot over vacuum and vacuuming should begin the day the wall-to-wall carpet, hall or stair runner or area rug is installed.

For best results DO NOT use a beater bar brush on any wool fibres.

Spot & Stain Removal

  • Dab and blot up liquids with paper towels or an absorbent cloth and scoop up any solids.
  • Work inward from the edge of the spot to prevent excess spreading. Do not rub, as this may cause the spot to spread.
  • Do not use any harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Do not saturate with water.
  • Blot dry between each step.

Preventative Measures

  • Use absorbent mats at every entrance to your home to prevent tracking in dirt.
  • Regularly change filters in your heating and air conditioning systems.

Periodic Maintenance
Use a reputable wool carpet professional to do a thorough cleaning periodically to remove the deepest soils.
